제주특별자치도립 서귀포관악단은 1998년 창단을 시작으로 연간 60여회의 다채로운 공연활동을 통하여 자치단체가 운영하는 공립 관악연주단체로서 한국 관악사의 한 획을 긋는 중요한 역할을 하고 있다.
클래식부터 현대곡에 이르기까지 장르를 넘나드는 연주회를 개최하며 다양한 전문 공연과 기획공연을 통해 도민과 함께하는 무대를 선보이고 있다. 그동안 지속적인 제주 소재의 창작곡 발표와 세계적인 유명지휘자, 음악가를 초청하였으며, 제주국제관악제 개막공연과 서귀포시 창작 오페레타 이중섭 공연을 비롯하여 아시아․태평양관악제, 일본 오키나와 구지카와시(具志川市) 시민예술극장 개관 5주년 기념 초청공연, 대구 문화예술회관 초청연주, 대한민국 국제관악제 및 중국 진황도시 교류 음악회 등에 참가하며 국내외적으로 제주의 문화사절단으로서 활발하게 활동하고 있다.
또한 정기적인 연주활동을 통하여 지역 주민들의 문화․예술 향유권을 신장시키고, 문화소외지역을 찾아가는 공연을 선보임으로써 고급 음악에 대한 저변확대를 전파하는데 기여함은 물론, 한국 관악 100여년 역사의 맥을 잇는 모범적인 모델을 제시하여 연주단체로서는 최초로 대한민국관악상(2010)을 수상하였으며, 환상과 신비를 간직한 제주도의 대표적인 연주단체로서의 역할을 충실히 수행하며 지역 문화예술의 명물로 그 자랑스러움을 더해가고 있다.
초대 상임지휘자 양경식 지휘자는 전국 유일의 공립단체 관악단 창단과 대한민국 중심이 되는 관악단으로 자리매김에 앞장섰으며 빛나는 업적을 남겼다. 현재 이끌고 있는 제2대 이동호 상임지휘자는 수준 높은 무대를 통해 관객들에게 신선한 호평을 받고 있으며, 윈드 오케스트라의 최상급 사운드로 더욱 발전된 변모를 보여주고 있다.
Jeju Seogwipo Wind Orchestra has performed over 60 concerts feature an wide variety of works annually since 1998. As the first and the only wind orchestra among the local governments in Korea, we make a new era in the musical history. From the classical to the comtemporary music, quality repertoire presented annually.
With various professional performances and project stages by world renowned musicians including new pieces by emerging composers, Jeju Seogwipo Wind Orchestra have tried to reach and serve people in community. From the local to worldwide, we worked as a Jeju’s cultural envoy as in the opening session of Jeju International Wind Ensemble Festival, Asian-Pacific Wind Ensemble Festival, in a concert for the celebration of 5th anniversary of the Community Arts Theatre in Kujikawa Okinawa, in the Culture and Art Center in Taegu, Musical Exchange Concerts in Qinhuangda and Korea International Wind Ensemble Festival etc. For the fine cultural enjoyment we reach and meet the community in regular and outreach concerts.
Jeju Seogwipo Wind Orchestra got the Korean Music Prize in Wind in 2010. It was the first time for the band to get in a century of Korean wind music. With that honor, as a representative band, we try to enrich the local art and culture of Jeju the island of fantasy and mystery.
The first permanent conductor Kyung-Sik Yang founded this the first wind orchestra and made great contribution as a representative orchestra of Korea.
Present improvement promoted by the second conductor Dong-ho Lee(present) give this band the support and the good impression from the community. In the beautiful nature of Jeju, Symphonic Winds of Seogwipo take the role of improving cultural value including the important keystones for incoming Han-Ryu(Korean Wave) as well.
